Abrasive deoiling – a hidden key to quality

Many problems in the shot blasting process are not visible to the naked eye – until they start generating costs. Oiliness of the abrasive is one such factor. Even small amounts of oils and greases reduce the effectiveness of abrasive blasting, extending the blasting time. Oily grit has a direct impact on the quality of the surface before painting or further assembly. This is particularly dangerous in the case of anti-corrosion systems and powder paint shops – an oily surface significantly weakens the adhesion of the paint, which results in weaker bonding of the coating and the risk of its subsequent detachment.

Why is it worth deoiling the abrasive regularly?

Systematic removal of fatty contaminants from circulation is:

  • stable surface quality ready for painting,
  • better adhesion of powder paints,
  • less use of filters and spare parts,
  • fewer complaints and rejections,
  • longer operational mix life.

For many customers, the implementation of deoiling turned out to be a turning point – not only technologically, but also financially.

Sorbent Protector + SP-Unit = effective oil removal system

  • Sorbent-Protectortis a safe absorbent that binds greasy contaminants in the shot-blasting cabin and removes them together with the dust waste. It can be dosed manually or automatically – but the key to its effectiveness is the regularity and precision of small amounts of additions. In practice, this is the stage that most often fails – forgotten and irregular additions limit the action and effectiveness of the sorbent. Therefore, we recommend supplementing the system with the SP-Unit automatic dispenser.

  • SP-UnitSP-Unit dispensereliminates human error and ensures precise dosing of the sorbent at the right time intervals. It is compatible with most machines – automatic and manual – and allows full control over the oil removal process. How does it work? After pouring the absorbent, the system automatically doses the powder according to the programmed cycle, the absorbent binds the oils in the shot-blasting cabin and goes with them to the filtration system, the entire process takes place without the operator’s participation.

How does Sorbent-Protector work?

Sorbent Protector is a preparation that effectively binds all greasy contaminants and then removes them from the shot-blasting machine to the filter fan. Its application is extremely simple. Dosing can take place:

  • Manually (by pouring the absorbent into the shot-blasting machine);
  • Automatically (using SP-Unit technology, which, by adjusting the amount and frequency of dosing, achieves the best de-oiling effects and optimal use of the agent).

The use of Sorbent Protector solves the problem of oily shot quickly and effectively, and its regular use increases the efficiency and quality of blasting. Thanks to the absorbent, the step of manual de-oiling of parts is omitted, which allows you to save time and money. Sorbent Protector can also be used preventively – its proper use does not negatively affect the shot-blasting process.

Sorbent specification

The composition and features of Sorbent Protector make it biologically harmless. If the absorbent is used correctly, it does not pose any hazards. Customers who decided to purchase it praise it for:

  • Shortening the shot blasting process;
  • Ease of use;
  • Faster achievement of appropriate roughness on the workpiece;
  • Improving the flow of abrasive in the machine.

How does the SP-Unit dispenser work?

The SP-Unit was designed for production plants that struggle with oil contamination of parts before shot blasting. Its absorbent dosing technology supports surface preparation and quality control teams—and, above all, protective coating departments. For coating operations, surface quality after shot blasting is critical, which is why using the SP-Unit can become essential. Thanks to its universal design, the SP-Unit dispenser can be connected to virtually any shot blasting machine—both automatic and manual.

Principles of abrasive media degreasing (oil removal)

The dispenser is designed so that once the absorbent is poured into the hopper, operation continues automatically and continuously. Powder dosing is controlled by an adjustable time relay that opens and closes at intervals programmed on the control panel.

The powder is transported through a pipe from the dispenser to the section of the machine with shot scrapers/collectors, and dosing starts immediately after the shot blasting cycle begins. The powder is then fed into the hopper so it can mix thoroughly with the abrasive media.

The absorbent binds oily substances inside the blasting cabinet with the abrasive media and is then drawn into the filtration unit during the blasting cycle. After capturing the oil contamination, it is discharged into a collection container together with the dust.

Free loan of the dispenser

Proper removal of oils and greases from abrasive media increases efficiency and speeds up the entire surface treatment process. Not everyone, however, is ready to buy equipment and consumables to tackle oil contamination—so we offer a free SP-Unit loan.

The trial period lasts 14 days. The only cost is purchasing Sorbent Protector absorbent for the loan period (just one bag is sufficient). Installation and removal of the dispenser are provided by Alumetal-Technik service.

If you’d like to see the dispenser in action, book a visit to our showroom. Our advisor will demonstrate how the SP-Unit works and explain the product details.
